Your Heart in Your Hands: AF

Disease Awareness of Atrial Fibrillation (AF)

At Daiichi Sankyo, we care for every heartbeat, and we are on a mission to help people take control of their heart health by raising awareness and understanding of atrial fibrillation (AF) and other key risk factors for cardiovascular disease. These also include blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and family history, amongst others. We believe that to improve heart health across Europe, there needs to be greater knowledge and empowerment. By improving gaps in understanding, we hope to encourage people to take proactive steps to protect their heart health, one beat at a time.

Your Heart in Your Hands: AF

Atrial fibrillation is the most common heart rhythm disorder. It develops in the atria (the upper chambers of the heart) and can cause an irregular and fast heart rhythm.1

When abnormal electrical impulses begin firing in the atria, the atria can contract erratically which can sometimes be too fast for the heart to fully relax between contractions – reducing the performance and efficiency of the heart.1

Did You Know?

A healthy resting heart rate should be between 60 and 100 beats a minute, however, with AF, the resting heart rate can often increase to 100 to 120 beats per minute, or higher.1

Symptoms of AF can include heart palpitations, light-headedness, dizziness, shortness of breath, fatigue, and chest tightness.1

But AF does not always present in the same way in all people, as symptoms and the frequency at which they present can vary.1 Sometimes people with AF are unaware that they have the condition as it might not cause any symptoms – this is especially common in older people, and around 15–30% of all people with AF are asymptomatic.2, ii

Daiichi Sankyo Europe is committed to sharing advances in scientific knowledge and enriching the understanding of AF, empowering people to make informed decisions about their heart health to help reduce the burden and impact of AF and CVD across Europe.
